Eurovision 2014 Final...

SO, AT LAST, IT HAS BECOME THE DAY.

Eurovision 2014 final is today, and what I can tell you -- this year seems too complicated to favor one particular song, since most of them are very good and will make a decent win tonight (today, depends where you are watching).

So, from my 20 favorites from the semifinals I scored 80% right (not so bad, I say to myself), but making a prediction on WHO will win, is a different story. I can't tell, just because: I don't know.

What I can tell you is, who I THINK can maybe win tonite.

I think the winner will be among these: Armenia, Austria, Hungary, the Netherlands, and Sweden. I don't like it, it's way too broad. But rounding up to 5 seems fair, just because I like odd numbers, and this only is my thinking... it'll depend at last on how Europe votes.

I think Spain and the UK will be the great performers among the big 5.

An songs that I totally LIKE, from Switzerland, Finland, Greece, Romania , Malta, France and San Marino will be well placed, but not enough to win. Why? The 3 known factors: block voting (mainly, ex-USSR countries and the like, the Balkans and Eastern Europe and the Nordic countries), the time of performance (1st half vs. 2nd half), and the geo-political and diaspora vote.

For this last reason, I see Ukraine scratching better votes this year, because of all the Crimea thing; same reason why, even though they have a KILLER song (the best in years), Russia will not be very well loved in 2014.

2014 Eurovision Song Contest

Llega el momento del año para Eurovisión, y en 2014 el concurso será en Copenhague, Dinamarca, el sábado 10 de mayo, y las semifinales ocurrirán el 6 y 8 de mayo.

31 países se juegan el volver a cantar en la noche final, y como acostumbro hacer aquí abajo van las canciones que yo creo pasarán, junto con el anfitrión (Dinamarca) y los "Big-5" (España, Francia, Alemania, Italia y el Reino Unido).

¿Qué es la Carta Democrática Interamericana?

Llevamos casi un mes escuchando, ahora con mayor ahínco, el clamor de "activar la carta interamericana". ¿Qué es eso?, se podrán preguntar muchos...

La Carta Democrática Interamericana es una especie de código ético, aprobado y firmado por todos los estados miembros de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), que data desde 11-septiembre-2001, y consta de 27 artículos, divididos en 6 capítulos.

En suma, el documento indica que las naciones americanas deben respetar los derechos humanos, el estado de derecho y todas las libertades.

Garantiza que los pueblos de América tienen derecho a la democracia y sus gobiernos la obligación de promoverla y defenderla. Que cualquier persona o grupo, que consideren que sus derechos humanos han sido violados, pueden interponer denuncias o peticiones ante el sistema interamericano de promoción y protección de los derechos humanos. Que los estados miembros de la OEA se comprometen a adoptar y ejecutar todas las acciones necesarias para la creación de empleo productivo, la reducción de la pobreza y la erradicación de la pobreza extrema.

Y las razones por la que el tema en cuestión es relevante, es por el artículo 20 que reza así:

     En caso de que en un Estado Miembro se produzca una alteración del orden constitucional que afecte gravemente su orden democrático, cualquier Estado Miembro o el Secretario General podrá solicitar la convocatoria inmediata del Consejo Permanente para realizar una apreciación colectiva de la situación y adoptar las decisiones que estime conveniente.
     El Consejo Permanente, según la situación, podrá disponer la realización de las gestiones diplomáticas necesarias, incluidos los buenos oficios, para promover la normalización de la institucionalidad democrática.
     Si las gestiones diplomáticas resultaren infructuosas o si la urgencia del caso lo aconsejare, el Consejo Permanente convocará de inmediato un período extraordinario de sesiones de la Asamblea General para que ésta adopte las decisiones que estime apropiadas, incluyendo gestiones diplomáticas, conforme a la Carta de la Organización, el derecho internacional y las disposiciones de la presente Carta Democrática.
     Durante el proceso se realizarán las gestiones diplomáticas necesarias, incluidos los buenos oficios, para promover la normalización de la institucionalidad democrática.

No es necesario explicar mucho el porqué del tema y por qué lo traigo a colación: la situación actual en Venezuela y el pedido de la República de Panamá para una reunión interamericana de cancilleres sobre la situación existente.

Veremos a ver qué pasa...

Malmo 2013 Eurovision Final Night

So tonight is the final of Europe's favorite song contest.

Here's a sneak peak!

With no Balkan countries in the final, and a with Scandinavian and Northern Europe countries in, is difficult to predict a solid winner... or a swing vote. Not to mention former USSR countries that usually do bloc voting also.

That being said, I strongly think the contest will stay in Scandinavia for the next year. Either Denmark or Norway will win tonight, I don't think Sweden will repeat the win. My heart favorite, Ireland, will maybe place in the top 5, and Germany will be the Big 5 top scored country, followed by Italy or France.

Eurovision 2013

So this is finally Eurovision week: 39 songs will battle to be Europe's song for the year 2013.

If you are not familiar with this Song Festival Contest, I may suggest you to look it up in the Wikipedia, it has a fascinating story... or you can browse my previous postings of other years.

Back to this year: as you may be aware, Eurovision this year will take place in Malmo, Sweden. This is because last year's winner (Loreen) is from this country.

So... 16 and 17 songs will compete in the Semi Finals, only 20 will join the Big 5 and Sweden for the Grand Final, which will be this Saturday 18 May. For a complete revision of the 1st and 2nd semifinal songs, you can watch these youtube lists:

How is a baseball game in Korea

Recently, while in Korea, I got the chance to go to a baseball game in Jamsil. It was my 2nd time there, and of course I was wearing my team's jersey!
Baseball in Korea is brilliantly different from what you are used to -- that is if you are from the Western side of the world and you watch US MLB.
I am dear to say that my team is LG Twins (for the most obvious reasons), even though they are not having the best season at this moment... Anyhow, what makes the game night interesting is not the game itself (odd!) but the spirit from the bleachers, the fans, the cheerleaders!
This is a video from someone that went to a game 2 days after me, never-mind: the crowd is as energetic as you will expect.
Odd! But a lot of fun! Thanks Gary, we had a blast!
And of course, Gangnam Style was played :)

HM the Queen

The Queen of England (and the other realms of the UK, etc, etc, etc) has been 60 years in the throne.
No big news. We all now this.
"Time" magazine dedicated August issue to her and all the Royals. Something my friend Liz will is happy about, because she's such a great Brit supporter... And I mean, Liz, my friend since college, not Elizabeth Windsor (of course).
Anyhow, such great festivities in London, just before the Olympics.

I must confess, I grew up hooked to the original series back in the 1980's, enjoyed a lot the re-runs in the 1990's... but now with the new series (started 1 year ago, and close to end the 1st season) it's fair enough to say that I enjoy to still be a "kid".

Mi visita a "Sukhi"

El viernes salí a explorar una opción diferente de comer en nuestra cosmopolita Ciudad de Panamá : comer comida tailandesa en Sukhi.

Según su sitio web, "Sukhi" significa "gente contenta y saludable"; puedo decir que salí bastante contento y (creo) que comí bastante saludable...

Les puedo comentar de lo que comí (y de lo que piqué de mis compañeros comensales):

• Thai Money Bags: 3 wantones fritos rellenos de una mágica mezcla de puerquito, camarones y castañas de agua, con un toquecito de picantito y dulce de salsa.
• Pad Thai y Drunken noodles, (ojo: compartidos, que no soy 'tragaldabas'), son como una sinfonía en tu boca por la variedad de sabores que armónicamente se mezclan en tu paladar para contrastar lo dulce, lo picante, lo amargo, con una variedad de tonos entre los fideos, los vegetales y la carne.
• Más info en el menú.

Para refrescar la garganta, una limonada con menta - admito, pedida con cierta curiosidad y reticencia, pero totalmente ¡recomendada! Como colofón, hay un postre que no está en el menú que es de galletas, helado y chantilly que les recomiendo pedir.

La relación calidad-precio es buena, el ambiente es relajado y la atención es cordial.

Dos recomendaciones:

• armése con un poco de paciencia ya que como la comida es preparada en el acto demora un poco (pero no mucho, no se asuste);
• ponga atención si alérgico al maní o a los mariscos: mucha de la comida preparada y servida contiene estos ingredientes.

Feliz día del padre

Dedicado a todos los papás que leen este post, en especial al mío al que le debo tanto, y a mi cuñado que ha empezado su andar en los zapatos de la paternidad.

For all dads out there, specially dedicated to my DAD, who is the best dad of the wold and to whom I owe too much... and to my brother-in-law that is starting the way of raising a child.

Papá: no lo sabes aun, pero te estoy observando.
Observando como haces las cosas, observando como tratas a la gente, la manera como me tratas a mi, a mi mamá y a mi hermana; la manera como vives está teniendo un gran impacto en mi.
Cuando sea el tiempo que me toque escojer una profesión y proveer para mi familia, tu ética de trabajo estará en mi mente.
El tiempo que pasas conmigo, aunque sea haciendo algo "tonto", me dará un sentimiento de seguridad.
Habrá momentos en mi vida en que lucharé contra mi integridad y tal vez no sepa que hacer, pero recordaré cómo defendías lo que era correcto aunque bien pudieras haber visto hacia otra parte.
Algunas de las elecciones que hagas son las que estaré haciendo también.
Por favor no temas de mostrarme tus fracasos, de mostrarme tus errores, aprenderé de ellos.
